Navigators and ASB Clean up NHHS Campus
The bi-annual Harbor Pride Day was held Saturday May 20th, and was a giant success. ASB’s beautification campaign and the efforts of the Newport Navigators once again tackled the task of cleaning up the campus grounds with brooms, shovels, rakes, and pressure washers. You will notice fewer shoe marks on the walls, less gum on the ground, and less trash around the buildings, because students took the time to pick it up.
Tommy Tar saw repairs and a new coat of paint applied, giving the statue a new lease on life. Tommy Tar was pressure blasted, repaired, and coated with a fresh coat of gray polymer paint. Thanks to Steve Joslin for supervising the students. I hear that Steve’s hands will be gray for at least another week.
Trash Cans on campus were painted with the same protective polymer paint in the school’s navy blue with and should last for many years.
Hand Ball Court was painted as a weather test of the polymer paint and sealant before further applications are made. Thanks to Jim Gula and his team of students that painted one of the courts as a test. If successful, the remaining courts will be painted as well as some of the buildings around campus. A special thanks to Bob Steel and our supporter, Richard Hart of H20 Polymers for donating the paint for the various jobs.
The morning food was prepared by NHHS’s own cafeteria staff and lunch of pizza and water was provided by the Peleuses family, Thank you Zeus and Stephanie.
Community hours were credited to those students that volunteered their time from both NHHS and Ensign.
Great Job to all.

At the first meeting of the year for the Newport Navigators, the Navigators welcomed Dr. Jeffrey C. Hubbard, Superintendent to the NMUD where Dr. Hubbard and Assistant Superintendent Dr. Chuck Hinman outlined the focus of the district on creating the necessary directives to better educate our students. An open forum, attendees were able to ask questions and learn more on Professional Learning Communities and Small Learning Communities found on our campus. Thanks to both gentlemen, who delivered important information and stayed late to answer even more questions. |

Reports
Dr. Dave Martinez reported that Robins/Loats has been undergoing abatement procedures for the past ten days and is scheduled to be completed at the end of June. You will see more fencing and more large trash bins around the buildings over the next few weeks.
The new boiler room outside Dodge Hall looks to be on task and is scheduled to be completed by the end of May.
The Athletics departments are getting upgrades on the alarm and announcement systems in the new re-routing of power to the gym and band room facilities. The plan is to have the wiring completed by June.
Softball fields have been under construction for the past three weeks with hard-scaping close to completion. Irrigation has been tied in to the master system, with details like the drinking fountains and bathrooms hotly discussed. Completion of the fields is expected by June with the field being planted over the summer.
Aquatics just received upgrades on their lighting system to reduce glare and offer the state-of-the-art lighting for CIF night competitions.
The practice fields are scheduled to receive a new score board in July.
The blacktop from the Gym to Davidson field is scheduled to be repaired and recovered over the summer. (You might have noticed some paint marks on the blacktop that is identifying the areas of repair.)
Jennifer Chamberlin
The School’s Safe School Plan has been approved by district and is the operating plan for the two disaster drills and two lock down drills conducted on campus each year. Jennifer covered the high points of the plan and procedure and announced a drill is scheduled before year end.
ASB is holding a “Black light Dance” on April 27th and Jennifer reminds all parents that three demerits will prevent your student from attending. Check with Jennifer to see if your child needs to work off demerits in order to attend the dance.
ASB is working on building signage to further assist navigating the campus grounds and local muralists to potentially add some more color to the campus. Michael Vossen has budgeted some funds to help the ASB students with this project: However, if you are so inclined or wish to support this project, please contact the Foundation office.
Dr. Tina Case
Professional Learning Communities focus on the learning achievement of the students and examine the strategies used in teaching our students. Tina covered the new emphasis being placed on teacher conferences and improving learning strategies that focus on student learning instead of teacher teaching. An abundance of data is being used to improve both the method and manner to which out students learn.
Intervention programs are another benefit of PLCs and Tina emphasized the importance of identifying students that are in need of some intervention and the resources needed in supporting teacher to provide additional time if necessary in reaching out students.
Technology
Tina is working hard to improve the technology on campus, and with the help of the funds now received from the Microsoft settlement of $121,000, Tina is charged with updating both software and hardware across campus.
Tina also announced that the computer lab is now fully alarmed and that we should all welcome Cindy to the lab as the new lab technician that will be working on lesson plans for our teachers!
Michael Vossen
Changes in the Bell Schedule have been approved by NHHS Teachers. This change results in school starting at 8:00 AM and ending at 3:05 everyday with eight regular sized periods without the elongated 120 minute classes your students are now experiencing. What are the benefits? Michael explained that the SLCs will have more flexibility to monitor student achievement;
Will increase PLC opportunities with one hour planning sessions a week for the teachers, and student choices (eight classes vs. six currently) with less conflict for advanced classes, ASB, Journalism, or athletics .
Students involved with athletics will now have the same schedule each day without conflicts for events or training sessions and course selections for all students will be expanded with the extra class that teachers will be conducting.
More information in the new Bell Schedule will be coming out from Michael, but you get the scoop first with the Navigators.
Next month we are trying to put together information on the safety programs on our site. We will be inviting Officer Martinez to speak with the staff and student members that are driving the Safe School Plan for NHHS.
If you are interested in other topics regarding your student’s life at NHHS, please send them to me and I will incorporate it in our meetings.
Sincerely,
Richard Riva
Navigator President
